Biotope Research and Development - June 2013

Biotope, in a consulting role to the Ministry of Ecology (Commissioner General for Sustainable Development) provided advice on the trends in biodiversity for metropolitan areas up to 2030. The objectives were to anticipate new trends and challenges for biodiversity up to 2030 and identify the regions with the greatest challenges under various development scenarios.

Several scenarios of our evolving society and how it views environmental management were developed, through elaboration of several variables: socio-economic context, establishing hierarchies in government, the evolution of environmental regulations, energy needs, transportation, etc.

With support from a multidisciplinary group of experts from various fields, (researchers in ecology, agronomy, sociology, natural area managers) the endeavor resulted in the identification of potential tipping points, the inclusion of biodiversity in public policy and strategic analysis, and proposals for promoting debate around the efficient and sustainable management of biodiversity within regions.
