 Biotope is a French independent company created in 1993 hiring today more than 100 people. Represented by 14 agencies in France, on the island of La Reunion and in Madagascar, Biotope is the leader of the French market in ecological engineering.
Specialized in natural habitats expertise, Biotope is doing strategic environmental assessment for all kind of planning projects (highways, railways, mines and quarries, etc.), and of projects related to energy (wind farms, solar farms, drillings for oil, pipelines, thermal power plants etc.).
Biotope is also a major stakeholder in the framework of nature conservation with an important participation to the implementation of the Natura 2000 network in France (designation of IBAs and about 100 Special Areas of Conservation). Biotope is doing species inventories, populations’ follow-up and habitats cartography, but also management plans and ecological engineering. At this level, Biotope is working in close collaboration with local stakeholders: farmers, hunters, nature protection associations, public authorities, etc., and developed great competences in local mediation and consultation.
Thanks to this know-how, we are requested to assess public policies and funding dedicated to Biodiversity conservation in France, but also in Southern countries (cooperation policy).
 Biotope is also taking part to discussion works concerning public policies dedicated to nature protection at European (Econat Network) and international level (active participation to conferences organised by the SIFEE each year). We are actively taking part in the implementation of carbon compensation mechanisms as well, integrating biodiversity issues in this process.
The communication agency of Biotope, composed of 10 graphic designers, specialists in popular science works (writers and translators) and photographers, is designing all kind of communication material to spread environmental knowledge and education: exhibitions, leaflets, websites, thematic trails, etc. Biotope is also a publisher, editing books that are references of scientific knowledge in Europe.
