Herpetological and ichthyological inventories of the Grand Abounami (French Guyana)

The French Office for Biodiversity (the OFB) has financed the setting-up of an Atlas of Municipal Biodiversity (called the “ABC”) of Papaïchton (capital of the Boni region on the Maroni), in order to learn more about the local nature heritage so as to improve its preservation and enhancement. It is a partnership project that involves students, inhabitants, local players and visitors. Three sites, with different challenges, have been chosen: 1) Papaïchton and the surrounding villages (Asisi, Loka, and Boniville), 2) Les Abattis and the Kotika mountain, and 3) Gros Saut. For the Gros Saut site, the ABC consists of producing a precise inventory of the habitats, the flora, and the large fauna, but also of the fish, shellfish and scorpions.

In 2020-2021, the Biotope Foundation  was involved in the 3rd phase of this programme, on the Gros Saut site found in the north-east of the town of Papaïchton, on the Grand Abounami. Its action consisted of:
  • Carrying out an ichthyological inventory (fish) during a mission in the dry season (November 2020).
  • Carrying out a herpetological inventory (amphibians and reptiles) during a multidisciplinary inventory mission in the rainy season (February-March 2021).
